By 2025, Hoosier Energy projects to supply its customers with at least 15 to 20% of their energy from renewable sources.

This achievement highlights the success of Hoosier Energy’s portfolio transition, which began with their Board of Directors voting in 2020 on the planned closure and replacement of the Merom Generating Station by June of 2023. Since that announcement, Hoosier Energy has been in negotiations to sell the 1,000MW facility to Hallador Energy. Hoosier Energy will buy 100% of the plant’s energy and capacity through May 2023, reducing purchases to 22% of energy output and 32% of its capacity beginning in June 2023 and through 2025.
Renewable Energy Achievements
Taking a comprehensive approach to our renewable energy strategy during the past several years, Hoosier Energy has significant accomplishments of note:
Reduced carbon emissions by 59% from 2005 to present
Added nearly 500 MW of solar energy to its future energy mix
Improved reliability and resiliency of transmission systems
Grown the Commercial & Industrial Renewable Energy Credit (REC) Program to assist Members in achieving their internal carbon reduction goals
Retired the coal-fired Ratts Generating Station in 2015 and plans to retire the coal-fired Merom Generating Station in 2023
